Docs / One-time licence
Bring your own provider key
The one-time licence is for producers who'd rather own the plugin than subscribe. Instead of credits, MIDI Genie uses a key you get from a provider of the language models that write the music, and you pay that provider directly for what you use.
Activate your licence
- Install MIDI Genie and open it in your DAW, or open the app on its own.
- Under License key, paste the key from your receipt email. It starts with
MIDIGENIE-. - Press Activate.
Can't find your key? It's in your receipt email and your customer portal. One key works on up to two of your computers. To move it, open Settings → About on the old computer and press Deactivate this computer.
Get a provider key
Pick one provider to start. You can add others later.
| Provider | Where to get a key |
|---|---|
| OpenRouter | openrouter.ai/keys. One key for models from many companies. |
| Anthropic | console.anthropic.com/settings/keys |
| OpenAI | platform.openai.com/api-keys |
| aistudio.google.com/apikey |
Most providers ask you to add a little credit before a key works.
Add it to MIDI Genie
The first time you open MIDI Genie with a licence, Settings opens by itself. Later you can find it in the top bar.
- In Settings → Model, under Step 1, choose your provider.
- Under Step 2 · your key, paste the key and press Save.
- Choose a model from the list. Each provider has a sensible one already selected.
- Press Test connection. You should see Ready with the model's name.
A ✓ next to a provider's name means a key is saved for it. Each provider keeps its own key, so you can switch at any time.
Which model to pick
- Start with the one already selected. It's a good balance of quality, speed and cost.
- Want to use an audio file? Choose a model with the hears audio badge. Other models can still read MIDI files.
- Larger models usually write more musical parts but cost more per request. Smaller ones are quicker and cheaper for simple changes.
The connection light
- Connected: all set.
- No key yet: add a key in Settings.
- Not tested: press Test connection in Settings.
- Not reachable: check your internet connection and your key, then test again.
Where your key is kept
Your key is stored in your Mac's secure keychain and never shown again. It goes straight from MIDI Genie to your provider. The first time each DAW uses the key, your Mac may ask for permission: choose Always Allow.
Updates and working offline
The licence includes a year of updates. After that, the versions you have keep working for good, and you can renew to keep getting new ones. MIDI Genie checks your licence quietly in the background and works offline for up to 14 days at a time; after that it asks you to connect and press Try again. You need a connection to make music, because your provider runs online.
Prefer credits instead?
You can also log in with a MIDI Genie account on the Creator or Pro plan, with nothing to set up. See Plans and credits.
